Transitioning your hair color from dark to light is a process that usually takes more than one session. Here are some tips from our talented stylists that should help make your transition as smooth as possible.
// HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT THE PROCESS TO TAKE?
For someone who decides to lighten their hair, Stylist Brooke says,
“Depending on the integrity and shade of the hair, it will usually take more than one session. The best way to find out is to come into the salon for a consultation, and your stylist can give you a clear answer based on physical observations.”
Creative Stylist Marisa shares the following advice,
“First, you should definitely have a goal set in mind for how light or dark you want your hair to be, but don’t expect that color on the first visit. It could take multiple visits to get your hair exactly where you want it.”
// HOW CAN I KEEP MY HAIR HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE TRANSITION?
After each treatment, Brooke recommends the following,
“You want to wait about 3 weeks after your first treatment to decide if you want to go lighter. See how you feel with the new shade, and this also gives the hair some time to rest.”
In between sessions, you can keep your maintenance at home. Stylist Kris suggests the following products,
“Blonda Shampoo & Conditioner from UNITE and U-Luxury Intense Mask. You can use these products if you’re ever feeling brassy or warm, or if you ever need a pick-me-up for your hair. These should be used once or twice a week.
You can also come in for a glaze to cancel or brighten the shade, which also adds moisture & shine to the hair.”
Marisa adds the following tip for hair maintenance at home,
“Pre-Olaplaex treatments will help to prevent any more damage that might be happening. Afterwords, Olaplaex treatments will help maintain the integrity of the hair at home.”
// HOW WILL THE TRANSITION AFFECT MY CHOICE IN MAKE-UP?
“If you’re transitioning from dark to light, you want to wear softer make-up so you can welcome the transition of the new shade on your hair. And if you’re going from light to dark, you want to concentrate more on neutral tones. Maybe a pop of color on your lips so you don’t blend in everything.”
// IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD KEEP AWAY FROM MY HAIR?
Brooke recommends the following,
“Stay away from sulfates and products containing any alcohol – these are things that can dry out the hair. You also want to stay away from extreme heat. If you need heat, you should come in and ask us to service you because we’re very conscious of not burning the hair.”
Stylist Assistant Alex adds a helpful tip as well,
“You also want to protect your hair from direct sunlight. You can use UNITE 7 Seconds Leave in Conditioner” to help protect against UV Rays.”
